Research is focused on the opportunities and threats that modern wastewater treatment plant faces. Central research areas are:
- Removal of refractory substances from municipal wastewater with focus on pharmaceuticals and on treatment of leachate.
- Optimized utilisation of energy and resources with focus on internal production of carbon sources for biological phosphorus removal and for denitrification.
- Anaerobic digestion with focus on methods for increased methane production, co-digestion of sludge and organic urban waste and reject water treatment.
- Life cycle assessment of handling of sludge and solid waste.
Education within Water and Environmental Engineering is concentrated on three MSc programmes; Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and on the international MSc programme in Water Resources.
